Radioactive Iodine (i131) Therapy: Information for Veterinarians

Here are the answers to frequently asked questions regarding radioactive iodine (i131) therapy and the pre and post testing ideally performed by the referring veterinarian:

  • Cost = $995.25 (includes consult, radioactive iodine treatment, hospitalization)
  • We are treating cats on Mondays. The average patient would be hospitalized for @ 7days (earliest possible release time would be 5 days).
  • We will need to have CBC, Chemistry panel, T4 (off methimazole for 7 days at least) and VD and lateral whole body radiographs within 3-4 weeks of therapy.
  • Clients should recheck with their referring veterinarians for a T4 and Chemistry panel one month after treatment.
  • Patients need to be off methimazole for at least 7-14 days before treatment.
  • We can schedule initial consults at any time, but the client may need to wait for next available Monday to do treatment.
  • Extremely effective > 95% cured with a single treatment.
  • Extremely safe < 5% develop any side effects at all.
  • Cats will be housed in the I131 room at BEVS. We are only treating cats.
